How to get a tiled sewing pattern PDF printed at a copy shop
Copy shops print from one file at one large size, not a stack of separate A4 or Letter tiles. Here is how to get your pattern into that shape before you go, and what to ask the shop when you are there.
Most home-sewing patterns arrive as a tiled PDF: many small A4 or Letter pages that each show only part of the pattern piece. That works for a home printer, but it is the wrong shape for a copy shop's large-format printer. A shop expects one file, sized to print as a single sheet at its finished dimensions, not dozens of individual pages to load, trim, and tape back together by hand.
Bring the tiled file as-is and one of three things usually happens: the shop prints every tile separately and charges per page, staff try to piece it together for you if they are willing, or you end up taping it together yourself once you get home. None of that is the "one sheet" print you were hoping for.
Your options before you go
- Tape it yourself first. Print the A4 or Letter tiles at home at actual size, trim the margins the designer marks, and match the registration lines edge to edge. Free, but it takes time, and the shop still only sees paper, not a print-ready file.
- Ask the designer for a copy-shop file. Some patterns already include a separate layout with the pages joined for large-format printing. If yours does, use that file directly; you do not need any other tool.
- Join the PDF yourself with a free tool. Desktop or browser tools built for this can combine the tiles into one PDF before you print anything.
