No copy-shop file? Here's what to do
Your pattern only came with print-at-home pages. Here are four ways to get a file a copy shop can print, with what each costs.
Free to $5, versus $0.50 a page. Pattern Stitch is free up to 12 pages and $5 above. A paid conversion lists $0.50 per page: $20 for 40.

Four ways to get a large-format file
| Option | Cost | Time | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Ask the designer. Many will send an A0 or 36-inch copy-shop file if one exists. | Free | Days, if they reply | Indie patterns bought recently |
| 2. PDFStitcher, a free desktop app with grid, trim, rotation and layer controls. | Free | An evening to learn | People with a computer who like settings |
| 3. A paid conversion service. Brooklyn Motif lists A4 or Letter to wide-format conversion at $0.50 per source page (checked September 2026). | $20 for 40 pages | Days | People who want it done for them |
| 4. Pattern Stitch, in the browser on a phone or computer. Joins the tiles, then cuts 36-inch roll panels and A0 sheets. | Free up to 12 pages, then $5 | Under a minute in our tests | Anyone with the PDF on a phone |
Doing it with Pattern Stitch
- Choose the print-at-home PDF at Pattern Stitch. Use the file the designer sent, not a scan.
- Check the proof. The tool leaves out cover and instruction pages, finds the grid by checking that lines continue across the joins, and trims the white border.
- Download the files. You get one stitched sheet, 36-inch roll panels, and A0 sheets.
- Send the panels to the shop. Ask for pages 2 onward at 100%, actual size. Page 1 is a map of the panels.
- Check scale. Every panel has a 1-inch square in its bottom band. Measure it before you cut fabric.

When it won't work
- Scans or photos of paper patterns: there are no drawn lines to join.
- Locked (password-protected) PDFs, or pages of different sizes in one file.
- Files over 10 MB or 100 pages.
- Sheets over 3 metres on an edge.
If yours is one of these, email [email protected] and say what the file is.
What we tested, September 27, 2026
Mood "The Trillium Ensemble" (MDF207). 49 pages, 2.1 MB. The tool left out the cover, joined 48 pages 6 across, and cut the 1181 × 2083 mm sheet into two 36-inch roll panels. Proof in 15 seconds on the live site. $5.
Mood "The Bucket Hat" (MDF262). 8 pages. It left out the cover and size chart, joined 6 pages in one row, and turned the strip to fit one 36 × 48 in roll panel. Free, because it is 12 pages or fewer.
Scale check. A 100 mm square drawn on a sheet measured 100 mm (±1 mm at 2 pixels per mm) on every panel it landed on, and the 1-inch test square printed on each panel measured 1 inch.

Questions
What is a copy-shop file?
A PDF laid out for a large-format printer: usually A0 sheets or a 36-inch-wide roll, printed at 100%. It saves printing and taping dozens of home-printer pages.
My pattern only has A4 or Letter pages. Can a copy shop print it?
Most pattern print shops can't print the tiles as they are. Join them into one sheet first, then cut that sheet into 36-inch or A0 panels, which is what Pattern Stitch does.
Will the size be right?
Pattern Stitch never scales the drawing. Each panel has a 1-inch test square; ask the shop to print at 100% and measure it before cutting.
Does this work for BurdaStyle patterns?
Burda PDFs need an account to download, so we have not tested one. Burda's A4 tiles are the same kind of file we test with; try the free proof on yours.
Have the PDF on your phone?
Pick it, look at the lines, take the panels to the shop.
